Socorro 2012

Socorro 2012 on the Nautilus Explorer 17-1 till 25-1
Just returned from our trip to Socorro Islands or the Isla Revillagigedo Archipelago. We had very high expectations prior to this trip and they were met 100%. The Nautilus Explorer is a very nice boat. Good cabins, fine dive layout and most importantly, the crew is absolutely fantastic. Did I forget to mention the food ? Yummy . The Nautilus Explorer runs a safe and good operation, and will let you dive fairly independant if you've got the ability.
What about the diving ? We went to 3 different locations. San Benedicto Island, "the Boiler", Socorro Island, "Cabo Pearce" and Roca Partida. In very brief words, shark or manta on every single dive on the trip (if not both). The Boiler is manta heaven. Great topography and many many very big and friendly manta's. We did 8 dives here in total and were never bored for a second. Visibility was sometimes down to 10 meters, but that doesn't really matter when the manta's are within touching distance. Also good for lobsters and whitetip reef sharks. Some people also spotted hammerhead shark on the cleaning station. Diving with the grafully huge manta rays accompanied by a choir of whale singing was indeed a lifetime experience.

Cabo Pearce also turned out to be manta territory. Manta's on all 3 dives as well as many octopus and also a hammerhead was spotted here (and a box fish for Inge).

If the 2 first divesites were manta land, then we arrived in shark heaven at Roca Partida. 2 days of diving and 8 dives with sharks + dolphins on 1 dive. Roca Partida is a very special place. When you add hammerhead, silvertips, galapagos and whitetip reef sharks on one single dive it is indeed a great cocktail. Ohh, I almost forgot the breaching humpback whales we could watch in our surface intervals.
One of our best trips ever. The other guests on the boat were a great crowd. Thank you to all on the boat for such a great trip. We celebrated our 15 th year anniversary on the trip, and that will certainly be a day to remember.

For big animal encounters, this trip is very highly recommended. If you've got a tendency for seasickness, then you will go green. Prepare yourself.

One last word. Before our trip we did one day of diving with Cabo Deep Blue run by Oscar and his wife. Great operation. Highly recommended if you want to do a day of diving or whale watching in Cabo San Lucas. Extremely friendly company.
