This is not a political website, but still I would like to make a point on the state of our oceans.
I think that my first inspiration to put on a mask and snorkel came from watching the Jacques Cousteau television series in the 1970's. It opened my eyes for the fantastic life under the surface. Much later I read his book, the silent world. Diving today, we wonder where all the sharks and fish went. In the era of Cousteau there was an abundance. One explanation is the very efficient commercial fishing fleets, another is the great demand for sharkfin soup.
I hope that anyone reading this, will think about and help arguing about sustainable fishing. Seeing a huge manta ray gliding effortless through the water is truly a magnificent experience. Diving with sharks another one.
I hope that the future generations will have the opportunity to have these encounters as well.
I am not a biologist and don't know what the effects will be if the top predator of the oceans are gone. Probably there is a reason why it is there. But from the point of an interesting biodiversity I strongly hope, that people one day will realise the stupidity of sharkfinning.
Maybe even there are health issues in eating sharkfin soup. The movie "The Cove" certainly showed the problems with dolphin meat. Ironically because of the polluted oceans.
I can recommend to watch the movie Sharkwater.
There are various organizations working for protection of wildlife. Why not join and support one you believe in.
Let's all work for a sustainable future, it all begins with our own actions.
